PERIPHERAL STIMULATOR IMPLANTS

Why This Orthopedic Surgeon Recommends Peripheral Stimulator Implants

Hi, Dr. Meredith Warner here:

I’m a board certified orthopedic surgeon, Air Force veteran, and founder of Warner Orthopedics and Wellness.

At Warner Orthopedics and Wellness, I work alongside other providers and staff to establish the best treatment plans for each individual patient.

I understand that each person is different. Many factors can interfere with your ability to get better, including diet, exercise, work-life balance, stress levels and more. That’s why looking at all these aspects of your life and setting the right course of action for you, is vital when it comes to reducing pain levels and feeling functional progress.

Over the years, I’ve had many patients approach me about nerve pain or discomfort. A lot of these patients are experiencing issues related to their peripheral nervous system. This refers to any nerves outside the central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord).

Peripheral neuropathy can be debilitating, disrupting your ability to work or engage in activities you generally enjoy doing.

Peripheral Stimulation is a safe, non-invasive surgical option for those whose lives have been disrupted by peripheral neuropathy.

“Nerve pain is a major source of discomfort for many of my patients, but each person is unique. That’s why I encourage them to discuss all their options, so we can find their best course of treatment.”

– Dr. Meredith Warner, Orthopedic Surgeon

PERIPHERAL NERVE STIMULATION

How does it work?

Peripheral nerve stimulation targets nerves that are the root cause of pain by sending small amounts of electrical current to those nerves in order to mask the pain you’re feeling.

During the initial phase of the peripheral nerve stimulation process, you’ll have an electrode or two, connected to the affected nerves. Patients do not typically need to be fully unconscious for this procedure. We’ll typically apply a local anesthetic, or a light general anesthetic.

At this point – you’d still be in the trial period for this treatment, where both you and I will go over your responsiveness to the treatment and whether or not it will be effective for you in the long-term.

If you do not choose to continue with this treatment, the device will be removed. If this method of treatment helps reduce your pain and you decide to move forward with it, we will continue into the next phase.

The second phase of this treatment process involves battery insertion, so the electrodes can operate without external forces, similar to a pacemaker. At this point, patients are able to continue regular activities.

“It’s always my goal to help patients get back to activities they love, through safe and minimally invasive methods.”

– Dr. Meredith Warner, Orthopedic Surgeon

CONDITIONS TREATED

Peripheral stimulator implants can treat a variety of conditions

Peripheral stimulator implants are shown to reduce pain in up to 70 percent of patients who receive this treatment. While the amount of reduced pain can vary from person to person, this can depend on the individual, severity of pain, and the condition treated.

You may be wondering if your particular case can be treated with a peripheral stimulator implant. Here’s a list of conditions that may qualify for treatment:

    • Episodic cluster headaches
    • Chronic migraines
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Isolated peripheral neuropathy
    • Diabetic Regional Pain Syndrome
    • Lower Back Pain
    • Neck Pain
    • Nerve injuries
    • Pain following hernia surgery
    • Postamputation pain

This list is not exclusive, so if you’re interested in peripheral stimulator implantation, I’d recommend giving the clinic a call to set up a consultation.
