Meniscus Tear Injuries

A torn meniscus is one of the most common knee injuries, especially for athletes that play in contact sports.

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a cushion between the shinbone (tibia) and thighbone (femur).

Also referred to as a cartilage tear, a meniscus tear can occur as a result of a forceful twist or rotation of the knee. In older adults, degeneration in the knee can contribute to the risk of a torn meniscus.

People who tear a meniscus often feel like something has popped in their knee at the time of the injury. Other symptoms include:

  • Feeling like your knee might give out beneath you.
  • Having knee pain or stiffness or a swollen knee.
  • Being unable to fully bend or straighten your leg.
  • Pain, especially when twisting or rotating the knee
  • “Locked” feeling when trying to move the knee

Common causes of Meniscus Tear Injuries

Knee Pain

Acute Tear

Most often, the meniscus tears during a sudden motion in which your knee twists while your foot stays planted on the ground.

Contact sports

The tear frequently occurs while playing sports. If you’re playing a sport, such as tennis or basketball, and stop suddenly when sprinting, you could overextend the knee joint and cause a tear. Making a sharp pivot during a game or swinging a golf club can accidentally damage your meniscus.

As you age, the cartilage at your knee naturally degenerates. Six out of 10 patients older than 65 experience damage to the meniscus even after doing simple activities, such as climbing stairs or walking.

Degenerative Tear

People whose cartilage wears down (due to age or arthritis) can tear a meniscus from a motion as simple as stepping on an uneven surface. Sometimes, degeneration from arthritis causes a tear, even without a knee injury.

Meniscus Tear Treatments

AT WARNER ORTHOPEDICS & WELLNESS, OUR GOAL IS TO GIVE YOU THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO ACHIEVE YOUR DIET & EXERCISE GOALS!

1. Rest

Rest. Take a break from the activity that caused the injury. You may need to use crutches to avoid putting weight on your leg.

Use cold packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.

To prevent additional swelling and blood loss, wear an elastic compression bandage.

To reduce swelling, recline when you rest, and put your leg up higher than your heart.

2. Anti-inflammatory supplements

Dealing with knee pain and inflammation doesn’t have to be difficult. Natural relief goes a long way to support the health of your joints, increase your range of movement and help rebuild cartilage.

Dr. Meredith Warner offers a full lineup of wellness supplements, The Well Theory, to help address inflammation and overall wellness.

3. Platement Rich Plasma Therapy

In Platelet Rich Plasma therapy the platelets are extracted from the patients’ blood, injected into the site of an injury and used to relieve damaged tendons or cartilage. The process is completed in less than an hour, and patients typically see results in six to twelve weeks. PRP therapy works because it uses one of the most essential parts of the body’s healing process in a high concentration to improve healing and make injuries recovery faster, better and safer.

4. Surgery

Knee arthroscopy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. In this procedure, the surgeon inserts a miniature camera through a small incision, then inserts surgical instruments to trim or repair the tear.

Partial meniscectomy. In this procedure, the damaged meniscus tissue is trimmed away. This procedure typically allows for immediate weight bearing, and full range of motion soon after surgery.

Meniscus repair. Some meniscus tears can be repaired by suturing (stitching) the torn pieces together. Whether a tear can be successfully repaired depends upon the type of tear, as well as the overall condition of the injured meniscus. Because the meniscus must heal back together, recovery time for a repair is longer than for a meniscectomy.
